The mean time between failures (MTBF) can also be predicted analytically based on the reliability tables for individual electronic components (e.g. in accordance with MIL-HDBK-217 or IEC 61709). The calculation involves summing the failure rates of all components under standard conditions. However, the informative value of the MTBF determined in this way is limited, as it assumes a constant specific temperature and fails to account for external random influences, such as the risk of thunderstorms and power surges.
